Avant toute restauration, il est très important d'analyser et de déterminer l'époque et les techniques de fabrication de l'objet. Ce sont ces éléments qui détermineront la restauration. Par exemple, on peut constater sur un cadre XIXème qu'une partie est dorée à la détrempe et l'autre à la mixtion. Certaines restaurations, dont l'objet est très altéré voir même avec des sculptures manquantes, demandent de dessiner puis de sculpter celles-ci dans un bois afin de redonner à l'ouvrage son aspect d'origine. Dans un souci de conservation, la restauration doit être minimaliste et il est indispensable d'intervenir le moins possible en utilisant que des produits réversibles.

Before undergoing a restoration, it is very important to analyse the piece and determine its period, its style, as well as the techniques originally used in its making. These will determine the different steps which will be applied for its restoration. For example, one can note that on a niniteenth century frame or mirror two gilding techniques were used: the first being traditional water-gilding and burnishing and the second being oil-gilding. When restoration is required, due to missing ornamention, a drawing of all missing components is necessary before wood sculpting can begin. The areas requiring re-gilding are then toned and blended to match the original gilding.

Taking care to preserve the overall value of a piece of art, restoration must be kept to a minimum. All attempts are made to retain the original finish in order to maintain its historical importance.
